The purpose of the society is to support seed saving, seed knowledge, and seed security in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. We do this by creating awareness and educating about seed saving, and connecting community partners.
Okanagan Seed Savers aims to develop a network of seed stewards who preserve and maintain local seed collections that contribute to the Okanagan and Similkameen’s food security, biodiversity, and sustainability against the backdrop of a changing climate.
Food sovereignty: increased knowledge and access to seed supply within a community network, protecting/preserving and growing/expanding diversity
Sustainability: connection to climate change, future-proofing
Accessibility: open-source, removing barriers to accessing seeds and knowing what to do with them, seeds and knowledge should be accessible, community-based
Education: promoting awareness of the importance of seed saving
Enthusiasm: having fun while engaging with learning
Scalable: from one person to the whole region
